Keynote

A Poetical Approach to Socializing English Learning

This keynote will examine the approaches of English Jer and their efforts of socializing English Learning via their language camps (EJ Camp). Utilizing the principles of Albert Bandura's Social Learning Theory as its core, the EJ Camp utilizes a syllabus that simulates various social situations incorporated into the modules in the camp syllabus. Instead of using the camp to teach about technicalities of the language, it focuses on the sociolinguistics of English in Malaysian youth instead. This keynote will discuss the merits of English Jer and their EJ Camps. The heart of this keynote will be spoken word poetry, as the modules utilized in the EJ Camps are based on the various activities and devices used in a spoken word workshop. These devices help deliver the objectives of the modules (linguistically) while addressing the social anxieties faced by the common young Malaysian English learner.

Workshop

On The Spot - Helping Clarify the Anxieties of English Using a Speech/Drama Workshop Activity

It will take its participants through an entire session of the module, getting a feel for the experience of the campers, not to mention an understanding of the approach of the module. This workshop will discuss and elaborate on the methodology employed by the module, how it helps the campers assess and address their English insecurities, and achieves its objective of helping to clarify their English-related fears and experiences that have impacted their English learning experiences.
